We had our first home match of the season! The guys all looked pretty solid today. Some great serving. Austin made quick work of his singles match, with Dom coming off soon afterwards. Mark and Matt swept their doubles match as well. Ryan and Chase made a good go of it, but their opponents had some pretty good rhythm. We really appreciate our sponsor today, CHIPOTLE- thank you!!! We would also like to thank all the Pope students that sat in the 40 degree (wind chill even colder than that) temps and wind to cheer the guys on. Parents, thank you for all the yummy snacks! Almost everyone made it to the team dinner at Taco Mac afterwards. Our record is now 4-0 overall and 2-0 in conference play. We don't play again til next Tuesday at Riverwood.

Wednesday, April 16 Semifinals v Cambridge: Pope Won 3-1
Wow, a very exciting match and we were very glad to be on the winning end of it this year! Austin, at 1 singles, finished his opponent off in 43 minutes. Chase took his 'hot' court and followed suit with another 'hot' quick match. Meanwhile there was quite the battle going on right next to them on Michael's court at 2 singles. Michael showed incredible fortitude, coming from a 4-1 deficit in the first set to WIN that first set in a tie breaker! He wore down his opponent (who even took a medical time out to try to change the momentum) and won the second set with ease (or at least he made it look that way). To look at Michael during the match, you would have thought he was taking a stroll in the park- he definitely knows how to look "chill!" Cambridge was tough again today at number 1 doubles, where they took their only point today. At number 2 doubles, Mark and Harrison were playing a very close match all the way through and through, so unfortunately they were not able to finish their third set after they battled so valiantly to win their second set. Marc was our hero, we could hear his voice cheering everyone on all over Laurel Park. Our record now stands at 13-1 overall and 11-1 in region play. Tomorrow morning we play our nemesis, Northview in the finals! If we beat them we will have home court advantage for the first round of state playoffs- Let's gooooo Hounds!
1s: Austin Bates won 6-0, 6-1
2s: Michael Busby won 7-6(4), 6-2
3s: Chase Forbes won 6-0, 6-1
1d: Ryan Heins/Dom Allan lost 6-3, 6-2
2d: Harrison Watkins/Mark Fisher 4-6, 7-6(5), 3-4 DNF

Thursday, April 17 9:30 am: Finals v Northview: Pope lost 1-3 Pope ends up 2nd place in REGION 7
Pope finishes the Region Tournament losing to Northview with the momentum swinging both ways several times during the match. Austin finished first, winning in straight sets to get our first point at line 1 singles, taking down his opponent with his usual flare in just under one hour. Ryan and Dom, at line 1 doubles, fought hard to win their first set in a tie breaker and they were up 2-1 in the second set, hungry to beat their foe, but didn't get a chance to finish them off. Chase lost at line 3 singles, leaving Pope and Northview tied at 1-1. Mark and Harrison were giving it all they had at line 2 doubles, but Northview closed the match, putting N'view up now 2-1. Pressure on now for Michael and Ryan/Dom. Michael had lost his first set, but was up 4-3 in his second set when his opponent had a surge at the end to take the last 3 games, giving N'view their final clinching point to take first place in region 7. That puts us at 14-2 overall and 11-2 in the region (our only loss to N'view twice)
Thank you to all our fans, family, and Athletic Director, Josh Mathews who came out to support us today. By the way, Laurel Park looked sharp, with all the seating, covered pavilions, signage and landscape- hats off to JP Weber, Director of Laurel Park and Tennis Dynamics.
Next up, as you can see, under our schedule page, is the 'state playoff tournament'. There are 32 teams that go to playoffs-the top 4 in each region. If you look on the boys schedule page, you will see us on the right hand, bottom half of the bracket, as region 7, #2 seed. We will play region 5 #3 seed at home some time by next Thursday. If (when) we win that, next, we would play the round of 16 by Tue, April 29, the quarters by 5/3, semis by 5/8 and finals on Sat, May 10 in Jonesboro. There is a very very good likelihood that we would end up playing Northview again in the finals on 5/10 (that's our goal). We had our chances today to take them down, so we are looking to get that opportunity to play them again!
1s: Austin Bates won 6-0, 6-2
2s: Michael Busby lost 2-6,4-6
3s: Chase Forbes lost 0-6,1-6
1d: Ryan Heins/Dom Allan DNF 7-6 (8-6), 2-1 winning when play was suspended
2d: Harrison Watkins/Mark Fisher lost 2-6, 3-6

Quarter Finals of 2014 State Playoffs:
Thursday, May 1, Pope v Cambridge at home 4pm: Pope wins 3-1
The Greyhound Nation continues to dominate, taking down the Cambridge Bears today. It was an exciting win, lots of energy on and off the court! Our singles pulled us through to take the three points we needed. Austin Bates, at #1 singles, continues his winning streak (17-0) and his run at state playoffs of not dropping a single game to his opponents. Chase at #3 singles, came off the court, next taking care of business nicely. At this point, we are up 2 points, with our #1 doubles team (Ryan and Dom) fighting hard to beat their formidable foes. Alas, the Bears doubles team took the next point, even though it looked like Ryan and Dom were going to win that first set. All eyes then turned to Michael's (#3 singles) court where he won the first set, was down in the second, but came back to win the second set in his usual calm fashion. The crowd erupted with shouts of exuberance. Yes we had a very good crowd cheering us on today, thank you for everyone who came! Our record now overall improves to 17-2! Way to go Hounds! Next up, we will play early next week, most likely down in south Georgia, in Brunswick if we end up playing Glynn Academy (Brunswick). If Union Hill (McDonough) wins, they are a 2 seed like us, so we would flip a coin to see where the match is played.

Semi Finals of 2014 State Playoffs:
Tuesday, May 6, Pope v Glynn Academy High School in Brunswick, GA: Pope wins 3-0
The Houndanado ripped through the semi final match on Tuesday, giving south Georgia a taste of what north Georgia has been experiencing this season. The Hounds were ready and took the challenge, giving it their all. We did not know when we were playing until later Sunday evening, but within less than 12 hours, the storm brewed and blew us to Brunswick ( over a 5 hour road trip in 2 mini vans, plus a handful of parents that were able to arrange last minute to get off work to go down with the guys to cheer them on). Thank you to our hardy volunteer drivers: Coach Kemper and Nancy Zarbinsky! Thank you, Pope Athletics and the Booster Club for helping us work out the trip, the overnight at the hotel. The boys all went on the court simultaneously for their matches so it made it hard to watch/cheer everybody. They played the match at the Coastal College of Georgia (thank you to their coach, Kemper Baker, for allowing us to warm up on his courts in the morning).
Our number 2 doubles team of Harrison Watkins and Mark Fisher were playing like fireworks going off-amazing! They took care of business in an hour, soundly defeating their opponents (amazing intensity and focus and energy). Next to win his match a few minutes later, Austin Bates, at number 1 singles. Sooo, we are up with 2 points now, needing just one more to clinch the match. Over on Ryan Heins/Dom Allan's doubles court they looked they were about to finish next, soundly winning their first set and up 5-4 in the second. Their opponents made a last ditch rally and came back to tie it up at 5-5, when on the number 2 singles court, Michael Busby, sealed the deal, clinching our last point needed to take the match(you only need 3 points to win). The Hounds were released! We won! (I don't think G.A. was expecting us to be that good).
We were only 15 minutes from the beach, so we HAD to go jump in the Atlantic Ocean after the match. Good times, good memories were made. Great job, Hounds! Go get em on Saturday. Our overall record improves to 18-2. We will be taking on our rival, Northview (the only team we have lost to all season). Watch out, I think these Hounds are pretty hungry!
1s: Austin Bates won 6-0,6-2
2s: Michael Busby won 6-2,6-3
3s: Chase Forbes DNF
1d: Dom Allan/Ryan Heins DNF
2d: Mark Fisher/Harrison Watkins won 6-0,6-2

Finals of 2014 GHSA State Championships:
Saturday, May 9, Pope v Northview High School at the International Park in Clayton County (Jonesboro): Pope takes 2nd place
The Hounds left it all out on the court today, but could not overcome their nemesis, Northview. It was looking very promising
at the start of the day, after we took our first point, with, Austin Bates, at 1 singles decimating his opponent with power, energy and pure hound hunger (for a Pope victory). Almost simultaneously, the Titans took control of the next point at 1 doubles taking down Pope's formidable team of Dom Allan and Ryan Heins. Now tied at 1 all, 2 more matches took the courts, our 2nd doubles team of Mark Fisher and Harrison Watkins and our 2 singles, Michael Busby. Both these matches were needed to win the championship, but alas, about the time both courts were deep into their first sets, with Pope on the defensive, another court opened up, allowing Chase Forbes, our 3rd singles, to start his match. The Titans took their second point of the day at 2 doubles, then all eyes were now on Michael's court and Chase's court. Michael was well into in his second set, in the fight of his life, working his magic to get out of the 4-5 hole he was in to turn things around and go up 5-4, hoping to take his match to a 3rd set (his opponent was frustrated to no end). Michael did not get to finish, however, because our formidable foes took the coveted 3rd point they needed on Chase's court, ending the match at 1-3. Our heartbroken, beloved Hounds, held their heads high and took the court as a team one last time to give their post match chant. What a great season, Hounds, finishing 18-3 overall. Seniors, we will miss all of you ( Austin, Dom, Michael, Ryan, Mark, Matt)! Harrison, Marc and Chase we expect great things of you next year! Thank you, everyone who drove down to Jonesboro to cheer on our Hounds!

3s: Chase Forbes lost v Josh Slovin 0-6, 3-6

Varsity Boys vs. Dunwoody State Playoffs:
It was a magical day for the Greyhounds at Dunwoody High School on Tuesday evening April 23rd. Excitement was in the air from the second both teams walked on the courts for warmups until the end of what could have been the last match of the year for the Hounds. Mark Fisher and Jerry Nonaka lost a tough and well fought doubles match. Dominic Allen lost a hard battle to a good opponent. At first it felt like this could be it for the Hound's season until Ryan Heins and Harrison Watkins fought back after losing the first set to persevere and pull out the WIN in a shutout third set. Michael Busby tacked on a big W for the 3 singles match to set the table for the last match of the evening as the teams were tied 2 - 2. Everybody was headed over to watch Robert Dickinson play in a win or go home match. Robert won the first set with ease, then lost the second opening the final frame. The pure motivation pushed Robert to secure the win in the 3rd set sending Pope to the 2nd round of the GHSAA State Playoffs. GO HOUNDS YOU MADE US PROUD!

May 1, 2012 STATE PLAY OFFS- SWEET SIXTEEN FINALISTS
Pope v Lambert lost 2-3
It was a day, running the gamut of emotions. We knew we would have a tough match with Lambert today. Everybody came into today's match, fired up and ready to go. We lost the first point in #1doubles, then tied it up after #1 singles (Austin) won, making the score, 1-1. Kyle had a tough match against a very seasoned nationally ranked player, who just recently came off knee surgery. While Kyle was doing battle, our #2 doubles went down playing 2 seniors. Whew, now Lambert was up 2-1. Dominic jumped on the court, with all guns firing, winning his first set just as Kyle went into his second set. Lambert had officially taken the match after Kyle came off the court, but Dominic went ahead and finished out his match, winning in a third set super tie-breaker. It was a good season, Greyhounds- we won our region and almost made it to the quarter finals in state. Hold your heads high hounds!
